What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition (the process by which the nervous system, including the brain, develops and matures), characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning or development. Individuals with ADHD may find it difficult to focus, follow through on tasks, regulate emotions and control impulses. The symptoms can vary in severity and are present from an early age, often becoming noticeable in school settings. ADHD is commonly diagnosed in childhood but can continue into adolescence and adulthood. .
Women often receive a diagnosis of ADHD later in life compared to men for several reasons:
1. Subtle Presentation of Symptoms: Women and girls are more likely to exhibit inattentive symptoms rather than the hyperactive and impulsive symptoms often seen in men and boys. These inattentive symptoms, such as daydreaming, forgetfulness, and difficulty focusing, can be less disruptive and more easily overlooked, both in educational settings and at home.
2. Stereotypes and Gender Bias: There is a cultural stereotype that ADHD primarily affects hyperactive boys, which can lead to under-recognition of the condition in girls and women. Teachers, parents, and even healthcare professionals may be less likely to consider ADHD as a possibility in females, attributing their symptoms to other factors such as anxiety, depression, or personality traits.
3. Compensatory Strategies: Women and girls often develop strong compensatory strategies to cope with their symptoms, such as becoming overly organised or perfectionistic. These strategies can mask the underlying ADHD symptoms, delaying diagnosis until these strategies are no longer sufficient, often during periods of increased life stress or responsibility.
4. Coexisting Conditions: Women with ADHD frequently have coexisting conditions such as anxiety and depression, which can overshadow the ADHD symptoms. Healthcare providers might focus on treating these conditions without recognising the underlying ADHD.
5. Social Expectations and Roles: Social expectations for women to be organised, quiet, and diligent can pressure them to conform to certain behaviors. As a result, they may suppress or hide symptoms, making ADHD less apparent to others.
6. Diagnosis Criteria and Research: Historically, ADHD research and diagnostic criteria were based largely on male subjects, potentially leading to diagnostic criteria that do not fully capture the female experience of ADHD.
These factors contribute to the tendency for women and girls to be diagnosed with ADHD later in life, often during adolescence or adulthood, when the demands of life, work, or parenting become overwhelming, and their coping mechanisms are not enough any longer.
ADHD is typically managed through a combination of behavioural strategies, medication, holistic care and supportive therapies.

WHY GET A DIAGNOSIS?
u
Benefits of ADHD Diagnosis in Childhood or Adolescence
1. Early Intervention:
- Receiving a diagnosis during childhood or adolescence allows for early intervention, which can significantly improve outcomes. Early treatment can help manage symptoms, reduce academic difficulties, and improve social interactions.
2. Educational Support:
- A diagnosis can lead to accommodations in school, such as extended time on tests, a quiet room for testing, and assistance with organization and time management. This can help children succeed academically and reduce the risk of school failure.
3. Development of Coping Strategies:
- Children and adolescents can learn coping strategies and behavioural techniques early on. These skills can become ingrained, helping them navigate challenges throughout their lives.
4. Understanding and Acceptance:
- A diagnosis can provide a framework for understanding a child's behaviour, reducing frustration for both the child and their family. It can also lead to greater acceptance from peers, teachers, and family members.
5. Preventing Comorbid Conditions:
- Early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the risk of developing secondary issues such as anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, which are common in untreated ADHD.
6. Building a Support Network:
- Early diagnosis can help families access support groups, educational resources, and professional help, creating a strong support network for the child.
.
Benefits of ADHD Diagnosis in Adulthood
1. Self-Understanding and Validation:
- For many adults, a diagnosis provides clarity and validation for long-standing difficulties. It helps them understand that their challenges are due to a neurological condition, not a personal failure.
2. Improved Relationships:
- Understanding ADHD can improve relationships by helping adults recognise and manage their symptoms, communicate more effectively, and set realistic expectations for themselves and others.
3. Career and Workplace Accommodations:
- A diagnosis can lead to accommodations in the workplace, such as modified deadlines, the option to work in a quiet environment, or flexible hours. This can enhance job performance and reduce stress.
4. Access to Treatment:
- Diagnosis allows adults to access appropriate treatments, including medication, therapy, and coaching, which can significantly improve daily functioning and quality of life.
5. Reduced Risk of Comorbidities:
- Many adults with undiagnosed ADHD experience depression, anxiety, or substance abuse. A diagnosis can lead to proper treatment for these coexisting conditions, improving overall mental health.
6. Personal Development:
- With a diagnosis, adults can learn strategies to manage their time, organize their lives, and prioritize tasks. This can lead to greater personal and professional success.
7. Empowerment and Advocacy:
- Understanding a diagnosis can empower adults to advocate for themselves, both in personal and professional settings, ensuring they receive the support and accommodations they need.
In summary, receiving a diagnosis of ADHD, whether in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, can lead to significant improvements in understanding, treatment, and overall quality of life. The specific benefits may vary depending on the age at which the diagnosis is made, but the overall impact is generally positive and empowering as it can feel as if everything moves from chaos to acceptance of the beauty of the natural chaos that is ADHD. This is a starting point to harness strengths to reach your full potential or see this for your child.

Our thorough evaluation considers not only the core symptoms but also other possible psychological diagnoses, providing a holistic understanding of yours or your child's presentation. and allowind individual tailoring of recommendations.
Our Comprehensive Assessment Process
1. Initial Interview
Our process begins with an in-depth interview (approximately 1.5-2 hours) with the individual or for children, the child and their parents. We delve into personal and medical histories, current symptoms, and any specific concerns you may have.
2. Psychological Testing
We use carefully selected questionnaires to assess attention, executive functioning (a set of cognitive processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks effectively. These skills are crucial for goal-directed behavior and include abilities such as impulse control, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and problem-solving. Executive functioning helps us regulate our thoughts, emotions, and actions, and is essential for everyday activities and decision-making) and other relevant areas. These are emailed after the initial session, allowing us to tailor the assessment to the specific needs presented.
3. Collateral Information Gathering
We seek additional perspectives on the individual's symptoms and behaviour. For children, this includes input from parents/guardians and, with consent, their school.
4. Report and Feedback Session
In a follow-up session (approximately 30 minutes), we provide a detailed discussion of the assessment results, potential diagnoses, and tailored recommendations. A comprehensive report will be provided, and we offer a shorter, adapted version upon request.
For our ADHD assessments, we use Heidi Notes, an advanced AI-powered clinical scribe designed to support clinicians in documenting consultations and generating structured clinical reports. Heidi listens to your assessment interview and automatically produces accurate, detailed notes and summaries so that nothing important is missed.
Heidi is not a replacement for clinical judgement, it is a tool that supports the clinician’s work, enhancing consistency and documentation quality while allowing the clinician to focus on you during the session rather than on typing or note-taking.
Comprehensive ADHD assessments involve a detailed exploration of symptoms, developmental history, current functioning across settings, and differential diagnosis. Traditionally, documenting this fully can take many hours of clinical time after the assessment itself, significantly increasing the length and cost of the process.
By using Heidi Notes:
• The clinician’s documentation time is dramatically reduced, because detailed clinical notes are generated simultaneously during the assessment rather than being written up later
• This allows more of the clinician’s time to be spent actively engaging with you, exploring your experiences, and integrating your history meaningfully into a diagnostic formulation.
• The efficiency gained means ADHD assessments can often be completed more quickly and with lower professional fees, without compromising thoroughness or diagnostic accuracy.
Your privacy and data protection are taken seriously: Heidi is designed to meet GDPR standards and adheres to robust information security protocols that protect sensitive health data.
• Personal information processed via Heidi is handled only by authorised clinicians and is used solely for clinical documentation related to your assessment.
