Neuropsychology

Neuropsychology is the study of the relationship between brain function and behaviour, helping to understand how injury, disease, or developmental issues impact cognitive, emotional, and behavioural functioning.

As a clinical psychologist, I have spent many years working with individuals affected by degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia and Fronto-temporal Lobe Dementia, as well as traumatic brain injuries and learning difficulties in both forensic settings and private practice.

I have post-graduate training in neuropsychology and have worked with patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neuron Disease (MND), and Huntington's disease.

I am able to conduct neuropsychological needs assessments, which include evaluations of cognitive functioning, memory functioning, visuo-spatial awareness, and other critical areas such as language ability, executive functioning, attention, and processing speed.  I also undertake Attention Deficit Hyperacitivity Disorder (ADHD) assessments for adults and children.

In addition to assessments, I develop neuropsychological needs-based psychological assessments tailored to assist Care Managers in Neuro-rehabillitation Services to plan treatment for their clients.

I provide a range of treatments tailored to support individuals facing challenges due to brain injury, neurodegenerative diseases and learning difficulties.

Here are some of the neuropsychological treatments

I offer:

 1. Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy
Cognitive rehabilitation focuses on improving cognitive functions that may have been affected by injury or disease. This might include enhancing memory, attention, problem-solving, or executive functioning through targeted exercises and strategies.

2. Memory Retraining and Compensatory Strategies
For individuals with memory impairments, I develop techniques to help improve recall or compensate for memory loss. This includes memory exercises and helping adaptations to use of external technological aids.

3. Behavioural Management
For patients with behavioural or emotional regulation difficulties, such as those with traumatic brain injury or dementia, I provide strategies to manage impulsivity, aggression, anxiety, or depression. Behavioral interventions often involve both the individual and family members or caregivers.

 4. Executive Function Coaching
I help individuals enhance their ability to plan, organise, and execute tasks. This is particularly useful for people with brain injuries or those with frontal lobe damage who struggle with decision-making, task completion, and organisational skills.

 5. Emotional Adjustment, Trauma Processing and Acceptance Therapy
After a brain injury or diagnosis of a degenerative condition, individuals and families often need help adjusting emotionally. I provide therapeutic intervention to help them cope with the psychological impact of their condition, including grief, anxiety, and depression.

6. . Family and Caregiver Training
Family members and caregivers often play a crucial role in supporting individuals with neurological conditions. I offer training to help them understand the condition, manage symptoms, and provide effective care while also addressing their emotional needs.

7. Workplace Rehabilitation and Vocational Support
For individuals returning to work after a brain injury or neurodegenerative condition, I provide strategies and support for managing cognitive and emotional challenges in the workplace. This might include job adaptations, cognitive aids, and collaboration with employers.  This can include employer training to help them understand changes the changes that their employee is experiencing,

Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual's specific needs, with a strong focus on helping them regain as much independence and quality of life as possible.
