Surgical Assessments

I provide psychological assessments for individuals considering cosmetic surgery, ensuring that mental health, expectations, and conditions like body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are thoroughly evaluated.  It is key to know that a person has the capacithy to consent to the treatment they are having.

These assessments are crucial for making sure that individuals have realistic expectations and are mentally prepared for the potential emotional and physical outcomes of surgery.

By understanding the full picture, individuals can make informed decisions, and any underlying mental health concerns can be addressed, helping them prioritise both emotional and physical well-being before undergoing surgery.

The General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK has outlined clear guidelines regarding psychological assessments for cosmetic surgery, emphasising the need to ensure that individuals are mentally and emotionally prepared before undergoing any procedure.

There are several key reasons the GMC requires this process:

1. Informed Consent: It is crucial that individuals fully understand the risks, benefits, and realistic outcomes of the surgery. Psychological assessments help evaluate whether a person has the capacity to provide informed consent, ensuring they comprehend all aspects of the procedure and its potential impact.

2. Mental Health and Emotional Stability: The GMC emphasises the importance of assessing a person's mental health before surgery, as individuals with underlying mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), may have unrealistic expectations or motivations for surgery. Identifying and addressing these concerns beforehand can prevent post-surgical dissatisfaction or worsening of mental health issues.

3. Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD): The GMC highlights the need to screen for BDD, a condition where individuals have a distorted perception of their appearance. People with BDD may pursue repeated surgeries, yet remain unsatisfied with the results. A psychological assessment helps identify this disorder, ensuring appropriate mental health support is provided, and unnecessary surgeries are avoided.

4. Protection of Vulnerable Patients: Psychological assessments are essential to ensure that patients are not being pressured into surgery by external influences or unrealistic societal standards. This process ensures patients are making the decision autonomously and for the right reasons.

These assessments, aim to ensure the safety, well-being, and ethical treatment of individuals considering cosmetic surgery, protecting them from unnecessary harm and ensuring they make informed, healthy choices.
